Meet Madelyn, Patient Ambassador at Children's Hospital Colorado

In 2021 Children’s Hospital Colorado started an exciting new program: Patient Ambassadors. Nominated by the community and caregivers, Patient Ambassadors have displayed extraordinary strength and courage in the face of tremendous medical challenges. Ambassadors have endured more surgeries, setbacks, struggles and hospitalizations than most people experience in a lifetime. And yet, despite everything they have been through, they want to give back to help other patients. Their stories of resilience remind us why it’s so important to support Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Out of 28 children, Madelyn Cummins (lovingly called Maddy by everyone) was selected to represent Rett Syndrome!

Many of you might know of Madelyn. She has been featured in some of RMRA’s marketing materials and her sister Anna gave Madelyn a voice in our sibling videos. Anna also raised funds for the Rett Clinic with a lemonade stand in 2016.

Maddie graduated AirAcademy High School now and in addition to being in a 3 day work program, she is focusing her energy on the Patient Ambassador program. Maddy’s family lives in Colorado Springs and as a military family they are used to moving around a lot. Years ago Dr. Alan Percy from the Children’s Hospital Alabama and Jane Lane, RN, BSN were her first Rett doctors out east and now the family is glad to live close to the Rett Clinic at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Maddy was also featured prominently in the Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation newsletter.

Additionally, Maddy was invited to be a guest of honor at the 2022 Project One Foundation Children's Classic at Perry Park Country Club on June 20th that benefited Research. She used her Tobii device to explain Rett Syndrome and the importance of research. Way to go Maddy!

Maddy’s sister Anna is continuing to help her sister draw attention to Rett Syndrome and giving Maddy a voice. She is running Special Siblings Instagram account and she received the 2022 Military Child of the Year for the Air Force award.

Each Ambassador has created a personal fundraising page to support an area of the hospital that is meaningful to him or her. Maddy, of course,  selected the Rett Clinic!
