Embracing Freedom on the Slopes: Reflections on the 2nd Annual RMRA Ski Day
On April 12, 2024, the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC) once again hosted an inspiring event: the 2nd Annual Rett Ski Day at Breckenridge Ski Resort. It was a day filled with special moments, shared laughter, and a profound sense of community as families gathered to experience the joy of skiing together.
For many families, the idea of skiing can seem like an unattainable dream due to various challenges, whether it be mobility issues or safety concerns. However, thanks to the innovative sit skis provided by the BOEC, all participants, regardless of ability, were able to glide down the slopes and immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of the Colorado mountains.
Sit skis are a type of skis that cater to individuals with a wide range of disabilities. Whether it's providing support for someone recovering from back surgery or offering cushions for added comfort, these skis enable everyone to partake in the exciting world of skiing. Parents who were initially apprehensive about their children hitting the slopes found solace in witnessing the expert care provided to them by the BOEC staff and interns.
One parent, Heidi Hedges, reflecting on their daughter Ellie's first skiing experience, remarked, "The first time Ellie skied, I was so nervous, but after seeing how the staff treated Ellie, it gave me a sense of peace knowing that she would be okay. They asked a lot of questions about how to communicate with Ellie, how she would communicate to them, her favorite music to listen to, and also questions they had about Rett Syndrome. They went above and beyond to take her skiing and know all they could before." The dedication and passion of the BOEC team shine through in their commitment to ensuring that every participant feels not only comfortable, but also safe, empowered, and excited while they are on the mountain.
The success of the 2nd Annual Rett Ski Day speaks volumes about the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in the outdoor recreational community. Everyone can benefit from being outside! It serves as a reminder that with the right resources and support, individuals of all abilities can engage in activities that were once deemed impossible. As one parent aptly put it, "If you never try, you'll never know!" The best part of the event was seeing the overwhelming enthusiasm and excitement from the girls who were able to participate.
Looking ahead, the promise of next year's Adaptive Skiing Day is eagerly anticipated by all who attended this year. Whether you're a seasoned skiing family or new to the sport, the invitation to join in on the fun remains open to all. Heidi Hedges, the point of contact for those with questions or concerns about their child's participation, is ready to address any inquiries.
In the end, the 2nd Annual Rett Ski Day at Breckenridge was more than just a day on the slopes—it was a celebration of resilience, community, and the boundless possibilities that await when we come together as a collective to embrace life's adventures and the abilities of all.
