Rocky Mountain Rett Association (RMRA) Mission:
Rocky Mountain Rett Association is an organization serving the Rocky Mountain region dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and their families impacted by Rett Syndrome. We achieve this by providing supportive services and resources to children and their families, engaging in advocacy, education and awareness efforts, and raising funds to support the search for a cure and improved treatment options. Position
The Board of Directors will support the work of RMRA and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by RMRA’s contracted Director position, the Board-Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
Leadership, Governance and Oversight:
Serving as a trusted advisor to the Director as s/he develops and implements RMRA’s strategic plan
Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by the Director and committees for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
Approving RMRA’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions
Being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the director and or contracted staff
Assisting the Director and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
Partnering with the Director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments
Representing RMRA to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
Ensuring RMRA’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the community that RMRA serves
Fundraising:
RMRA Board Members will consider RMRA a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that RMRA can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals. RMRA expects to have 100 percent of Board Members responsible for $500 worth of revenue including a direct donation, company donations, securing sponsors/donors and or selling tickets to events.
Board terms/participation:
RMRA’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term after taking a year break from the Board. Committee meetings will be held monthly or quarterly depending on the committee. Full Board meetings will be held quarterly and executive committee meetings will be held monthly. Currently, meetings are held via Zoom.
Qualifications:
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about RMRA’s mission and or who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
Professional experience with executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector and or a relationship with or as a Rett families
A commitment to and understanding of RMRA’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of RMRA’s beneficiaries
Committees:
Fundraising:
Serve a committee chair or member of the fundraising committee and provide support in the annual events: Mardi Gras, Virtual Rett (final name TBD), Ride 4 Rett and any smaller fundraisers that occur such as t-shirt fundraisers.
Finance & Development:
Work with the treasurer and bookkeeper to create the annual budget.
Cultivate relationships with potential donors.
Secure sponsors for any of the annual fundraising events.
Family & Clinic Support:
Organize an annual family gathering.
Plan and host the lunches at the monthly clinic.
Assemble RMRA welcome bags for new families attending the Clinic.
Determine “something” to share with the returning families.
Present and or organize presenters at the luncheons.
Marketing & Social Media:
Assist with content creation.
Assist with sharing content during busy fundraiser weekends.
Create and implement innovative (to RMRA) ways to engage families on organization’s social media platforms.
Service on RMRA’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
